Artist’s Statement:
OUR STRUGGLE ( 2021)
As an artist, I have always spent my creative energy celebrating positive and joyful images of Black life on canvas. Until now. As an African American artist, it is impossible to ignore this country’s current racial reckoning. The George Floyd and Breonna Taylor murders exposed a history of police brutality that has terrorized our lives and affected Black people’s very existence.
The insurgency at our nation’s Capitol on January 6th exhibited to the world our country’s systemic racial divide. The once underground groups of white supremacy were on full display, directed by our then nation’s President, violently attempting to overthrow the workings of our government and our democracy. Artists and writers use pens and paints to express their personal shock, horror and indignation to announce: “This terror must end.”
As a visual artist releasing my anger, outrage and sadness has resulted in these canvases. This is a creative eruption of deep and vast emotional frustration. These new works are titled “OUR STRUGGLE”.>
